Micahel West writes "As reported on OpenOffice.org: 'For an undisclosed sum but reputed to be in the billions, micros0ft's Bill Gates has personally bought the leading open-source desktop project. Saying he "was sick and tired of open-source eating away at his profits," the world's richest man decided to put an end to the nuisance and simply buy OpenOffice.org. It will form part of a growing list of micros0ft acquisitions including several erstwhile competitors, a considerable number of prominent politicians, and a few small governments

It looks like Gates may be in for another battle in the courtroom
with the Anti-Monopoly laws. Depending on how much of the world
is using OpenOffice as an alternative to MS Office, he may be forced
to give it up because Microshaft is cornerning the market again, just
like it did with the internet browser. Unless they want to share their
Office technology with the computing community (which is not likely),
we should be seeing ClosedOffice on its way.

Although MS Office is a good application, it has become unaffordable
for the majority of home users. And by taking away their competition,
they can set the pricing even steeper and offer a lower quality product
in the future. This is exactly the kind of stuff that urges cracking and
bootlegging of their software.
