Don't install tons of fonts. They take up a lot of system memory.
Use FontExplorer. There was a link posted in the apps section a while ago.

I have a disgusting amount of fonts, i use only a handful, i have say 100 or so i would keep for designing purposes, the rest are absolutely horrid.
